Review: "Persepolis"
Persepolis is the story of Marjane Satrapi, by Marjane Satrapi. An inquisitive, hyper young girl, she lived through the end of the Iranian Shahs and the beginning of the Islamic Revolution. She would grow up to see the changes inflicted upon Iran, and how those changes inflicted her and her sense of self. The story was told in two graphic novels:
Persepolis I chronicles her youth through being sent to a French school in Vienna;
Persepolis II tells of her life in Europe, return to Iran, and eventual (final) journey to France.
Persepolis holds a special place in my heart. Its illustration style is novel and beautiful, all at once subtle (I find it amazing how different each character looks, despite a style involving no color and minimal/no facial features) and blunt. Marjane is a wonderful character, both a very real, tangible person and a reflection of the turmoil of post-Revolutionary Iran. She has such a spirit about her - I hope I had the same spirit at her age.
The movie is very, very true to the novels. The art style is
exactly the same, down to the final detail - seeing it animated brings great depth to the comic. The music is very appropriate and
real, I loved the use of guitar especially.
The movie is deep and tender and very, very important. A very strong recommendation!

Off to Arizona
We did it!!!!!!That was awesome. That was freaking
awesome. In Ivy's apartment watching the game, I think I paced around for 4 hours straight. Let's just say it's very sweet seeing Eli in the Super Bowl but not his brother; it's also sweet that we are beating the teams that we lost to in the regular season. For all we know, the Pats are next.
We're playing really well, our defense has really come together and Eli Manning suddenly looks like a bona fide star. We have this whole "Cinderella/Team of Destiny" thing going. Of course, that's probably not nearly enough to stop the Pats, who run with the efficiency of the Borg. But you never know.
Go Giants!!! Off to Arizona we go!

Out of ideas
After the redesign of my
new site, I am just out of creative ideas. Which sucks, cause I need a song to post this week! I was looking through my old stuff - I wrote a
lot of music. Some of it was actually pretty cool. I guess I've been productive for a long time without even realizing it. Maybe I'll revamp an old song for this week, I'm tapped out. I'd also like to thank Krys for commenting on the layout! :)
It only goes to show how crazy politics is. Clinton won in Nevada, but
Obama got more delegates, so who
really won? And what does the media report on? All anyone seems to remember is the word "win". The whole thing is getting pretty frustrating. On Feb. 5, I'm just going to vote for who I believe in, and try to forget all this media crap. I feel like the media killed John Edward's campaign by not focusing on him
at all. Same for the other Dems (save Obama and Clinton). I miss Bil Richardson.
Giants game is at 6:30, (after the
CC meeting, thankfully) and I am very, very excited. There's absolutely nothing better than a playoff game between two original franchises in below-freezing temperatures at a historic stadium. And if it's a close game, it could be a game for the ages.
No one believes we can do it, but we're on a roll, and I'm at least giving it a "Why not?" In any case, it'll be fun.
